Cookie Policy

The Van Winkel Fashion B.V. Cookie Policy covers the operations of the company websites of Van Winkel Fashion and the consumer websites of the Ledûb, John Miller and Blue Crane brands. In order to include all brands, in the policy we will use the term Van Winkel Fashion to cover all the above.

What are cookies?

A cookie is a small piece of text that is added to a visiting browser by a web server, in the hope and expectation that the browser will return this upon the following visit.

The cookie is an addition to the HTTP-specification. The Hypertext Transfer Protocol is used by every person who visits a website: it controls the communication between a webserver and a browser. However, it was not designed to view consecutive page visits as a whole. Therefore, it is not automatically possible to retrieve the data or settings during a follow-up visit.

In order to make that possible, in 1997 the cookie and set-cookie-headers for HTTP were introduced. This specification was last updated in April 2011 and it is currently going through life as RFC 6265 HTTP State Management Mechanism.

How do cookies work?

Contrary to what politicians still claim, cookies themselves are not small programs nor are they files, and from a technical standpoint, nothing is uploaded by the web server to the visitor’s computer. The browser can decide this completely by itself. In the end, cookies are often stored as files, but a web server cannot force a browser to actually save the cookies or to return them during a later visit.

A cookie is always tied to a specific domain or subdomain. Therefore, cookies are only sent back to the same domain as the one they came from. You can therefore be sure that only the Van Winkel Fashion servers receive the cookies that were previously acquired from Van Winkel Fashion. Also, through javascript, access to cookies that were placed by Van Winkel Fashion can only be obtained by Van Winkel Fashion.

An important point about cookies is that they can be received for every http-request and that all known, relevant cookies will be sent with every request. This is also true for requests with which images, javascript and css files are requested for a webpage. Naturally, the domain control is also adapted.

First-party cookies

Cookies that you receive for the same domain that you are visiting, are called first-party cookies. When visiting this page, the Van Winkel Fashion cookies are therefore first-party cookies.

Third-party cookies

It is also possible that a website contains elements from third parties. Well-known examples are embedded videos, advertising and social media. If cookies are sent through these elements from their own servers, these are called third-party cookies. It is possible that when you visit Van Winkel Fashion you could receive third-party cookies for Facebook.com, Youtube.com and other third-party websites.

Even if such cookies are not used, you will still see advertising. There is also advertising that does not make use of cookies.

Cookies make the following possible:

  • Advertisements that you have already seen can be kept in order to avoid you seeing the same advertisements over again
  • The number of unique visitors who click on the advertisement can be logged
  • Targeted advertisements can be shown (for example a product for young people on a website for young people)

Because of the way HTTP works and the security around cookies, it is not possible for the first party – in our example Van Winkel Fashion - to influence the sending of third-party cookies.

What are the cookies on Van Winkel Fashion used for?

With cookies it is possible to retrieve information from previous visits for future visits. These are used to remember that you have logged in, that you have selected specific settings and that you have previously seen specific site elements. Cookies which adapt the functionality of the site to your wishes are called functional cookies.

Furthermore, cookies can be used to inform the site that a visitor has previously visited the site and statistical data about the use of the website can be collected. A well-known example is Google Analytics. We only use and process anonymised statistical information to analyse and improve the functionality of the site. Information about your visitor behaviour can potentially be used to select advertisements based on your interests. Van Winkel Fashion only uses anonymised information from pages that you have visited before on Van Winkel Fashion.

The visitor profiles set up by Van Winkel Fashion, using first-party cookies, will never be shared with third parties and will only be used to improve the quality and the relevance of Van Winkel Fashion.
